| Will My Web Developer Really Ensure My Site Is Ready For Google? |
|
The answer is no most of the time in my experience. Most web developers are more graphic or code based programmers who have minimal understanding of how SEO actually works. SEO is a relatively simple thing to do, but the extent to which you need to scrutinize a web site and its code is painfully time consuming if you want to do it properly. Also SEO in the more competitive industries should rely to some extent on the SEO companies experience and understanding of not only your business, but that of your competitors too. As an SEO specialist we study the competition on a clients behalf for months and we often build Search Engine Promotional Programs around the web sites theme and structure. The search engines are constantly changing the way they do business and your web site should be adapting at the same pace to keep up. A web design company has no is the best place to get a great looking web site, with all the right functionality, clever databases and clever navigation. Why would they try to tackle a minefield (Search Engine Placement) when budgets are restricted and skill sets are different. Building a successful SEO program takes time, money and patience. 4 or 5 months is not really enough time to reap the benefits and building a web site is usually completed in a month or two. Content is still king on the internet and any successful SEO program will rely heavily on lots of great content. Again, this is build up over a period of time and that is something you don't normally task your web designer with. If you do not rely on your web site for a living, or your site is simply there for personal reasons, then no, why would you want strangers to visit your personal web space. After all that's why we have my space etc. If on the other hand you your business relies on regular traffic from Google, MSN and Yahoo so that you are able to sell your goods, services or promote your ideas online then you probably will do at some stage. This will depend on quite a number of factors including. the age of your web site, the quality of its content and the number of competing web sites that all want a piece of the Google, Yahoo and MSN search results on page one or two. Naturally if you have a huge brand your web site may come up at number one on Google and you could make a comfortable living from that. If not and your competitors are Direct Line Insurance, Money SuperMarket, Expedia, Autotrader or Vans Direct then you will have no real choice if you want to be competitive then the top 10 pages are going to your target! |
